Happy Living
What is Feng Shui? What is Vastu?
Both systems are based on the flow of universal energy known as chi in Feng Shui or prana in Vastu. Both are based on the harmony of five elements, however the elements recognized are bit different.
Feng Shui has been practiced in China for over 3000 years. It is a complex body of knowledge on how to balance the energies of any given space to ensure good fortune and health.
Feng means wind and shui means water. In Chinese culture wind and water are associated with good health, thus good feng shui means good fortune, while bad feng shui brings bad luck. Feng shui believes that land is alive and filled with chi or energy.
Vastu is the traditional Indian system of architecture based on natural principles of design, layout, directional alignment and spacial geometry. It seeks to create a spiritual, happy and successful living and workspace.
Similarities and differences between Vastu and Feng Shui
Both Feng Shui and Vastu seek to create balance with the natural world inside our homes. The home is not a lifeless entity, it expresses itself based on the flow of chi or prana through it. Slowing down the speed of energy flow and allowing it to meander throughout the home by various techniques and solutions is what the master does.
Feng shui offers a variety of cures to improve your life. The feng shui use of aquariums to attract prosperity; the feng shui use of fountains and crystals; from the right feng shui use of colours and the feng shui use of clocks, there are many ways you can improve the energy in your home.
However, to create a spiritual space in your home, we must turn to Vastu, the sacred architectural science of home design. According to Vastu, living in a spiritual environment helps you attract health, wealth and happiness. Vastu Shastra (science of Vastu) places a lot of importance on the kitchen area, considering it scared and deserving of special treatment.
Vastu generates harmonious energy using Yantras (Tantric symbols), images and statues of deities, creating a spiritual centre (Brahma Sthan) or geographical centre of your house. The spiritual centre produces massive amounts of positive prana which helps residents achieve peace and grounding. Feng shui considers the home centre as heart or ying yang point from which all bagua energies arise.
Many scholars believe that Vastu Sahstra or Vaastu gave birth to feng shui, originating in ancient India and reaching China following the footsteps of Buddhist monks. This transfer of Vedic knowledge to China came to be known as feng shui which is still practiced in India in its original form known as Vastu. In the west over the last 30 years, Vastu is getting recognized as the holistic method of achieving health, prosperity and spiritual growth for the individual.
